Light Infused California Ranch
Charming Beach Cottage
Challenge:
We were entrusted with the transformation of a charming 1924 fishing cottage that had undergone only rudimentary updates over the decades. Despite its modest 600-square-foot footprint, the home’s greatest allure lay in its breathtaking ocean and bay views, along with its easy access to the beach. The owner envisioned a retreat that embraced the character of the remote beach village—one where she could create lasting memories with her family, especially her grandchildren, and dear friends.
Solution:
Respecting the local vernacular and preserving as many original details as possible, we meticulously utilized every square inch in the complete remodel. The structure was stabilized, and new framing was added to accommodate updated windows, electrical, and insulation. The former back porch was reimagined to provide access to the main bathroom—perfect for rinsing off sandy feet and paws—along with a much-needed half bath accessible from the bedroom. In the kitchen, an original cabinet was thoughtfully integrated into the new design. Additionally, reclaimed old-growth redwood was repurposed to craft a custom mantle, well-stocked bookshelves, and a beloved window seat, further infusing the space with warmth and history.
